I remember loving the best daughter of truth When you were young truth was all you had And I loved you for it, yes I did It made you strong and hard-fired Like the truest of women We all hoped how you would lead us We should have known how you would leave us With your fortune in one hand and a shackle on the other You knew you sold yourself too cheap You swept the good nights from your sleep You swept the gods of Egypt off their feet Your firstborn from your heart And you dreamed and it was misery to wake From the glory of love to the brothels of Rome And somehow I knew that you would not be home again So I looked for you and I brought you truth But you spurned that cup and You had two with Cain And so I will come out to your city walls When you are kept under siege by God Almighty And I know you cursed me But it was you, my love, who lay down under that curse My mother, my sister, my wayward daughter My mother, my sister, my wayward daughter My mother, my sister, my wayward daughter America, you broke my heart You said, not tonight will I listen I said, time will come when you wish you had

The King 03:42
It's good to be the people's king: They make a gold crown for your head; They send you cards; they write sunny things; They leave you chocolates on your bed. You get your face sewn on the flag. You get the men with sticks at night. You get your enemies in bags Until the country's thinking right. You grow the dollars from the ground; You get to pass them all around. Yeah you know you got it coming from the king.  Everybody has it coming from the king. She caught my eye the other day. My people said you're very proud. A black dress embassy soiree, A golden statue in the crowd. My trophy room has one bare wall. We won't pretend that you'll agree. A Green Zone posting solves it all; I let you keep your skin for free. I'll strip a man of all he has. L'etat c'est moi, and all that jazz. You know you got it coming from the king.  Everybody has it coming from the king.   And if you curse me in your solitary nights, My men pry out the secrets that you keep: Your taped-up eyes; my face flashing in the lights; And then you'll see me till you see me in your sleep. You'll see me till you go out with the lights.  I got so mean by meaning well. To make the omelet, crack the eggs; To crack the eggs you break the shell; To break the shell you crack the legs. The revolution always wins.  Love hides a multitude of sins. You know you got it coming from the king.  Everybody has it coming from the king.

Young men, be strong The time to bend your arm is coming ‘round The time to set your feet and hold your ground It’s coming ‘round Sisters, be brave It’s time to raise the shout ‘til you are heard Make the walls shake with the sound of every word ‘Til you are heard ‘Til you are heard Now rise up with the morning sun Rise up for the day yet to be won Rise and stand unbowed and overcome Rise and stand unbowed and overcome Fathers, be wise The blood your fathers spilled calls out again The liberty we bought you must defend Calls out again Mothers, don’t cry For such a time as this you raised our sons For men to do what men have always done You raised our sons You raised our sons Repeat chorus People, be free Take the great gift in your fists and don’t let go No matter if a king or conquer'r tells you so You don’t let go People, be strong The time to bend your arm is coming ‘round The time to set your feet and hold your ground It’s coming ‘round It’s coming 'round Repeat chorus

Benediction 04:50
As you lift your bag my boy And as you make from home Take my steel from where it sleeps beside the door May it keep you in your waking Your strength meet to its strength May the devils split their hearts upon my gift And your heart will break and burn But boy, do not this way return Set your face and turn your body to the wind Let the colors tear the sky Let the good ones go and die Set your face and do not come this way again I know not where my father’s bones Are sleeping in the dirt He drove me from his country ‘fore I was grown And I tore out from the mountains Every stick and every stone I made into the house where you were born And as I was sent, so you I send Call out for fire and it descends Call for mercy, turn your body to the wind Let the colors tear the sky Let the good ones go and die Set your face and do not come this way again Go disappear across the fields I’ll watch your shining heart grow small I’ll walk out to the horses’ graves where I will kneel Your mother’s songs rise in my ears Rise with the smoke up from the earth And dissolve into the Blessed Virgin’s prayers No tongue of angels nor of men No word of blessing can defend Set your face and turn your body to the wind Let the colors tear the sky Let the good ones go and die Set your face and do not come this way again And your heart will break and burn But boy, do not this way return Set your face and turn your body to the wind Let the colors tear the sky Let the good ones come and die Call for mercy, do not come this way again Set your face and turn your body to the wind Set your face and do not come this way again

Come down from the cold, cold hills The dirt is red The dirt is red Draw now from the stranger’s well  The dirt is red my love Felling axe left mountain bare The fires burned The fires burned The road is dark under the stars The fires burned my love No pity in the broken land No whispered prayer recalled Little ones, your little ones Your little ones my love Come down from the cold, cold hills The dirt is red The dirt is red Draw deep from the stranger’s well The dirt is red my love

Do you remember, dark-eyed winter child, The way the summer nights would settle  On the boundary pines? The way the air was warm and wet And full of honeysuckle scent? And how the moon lit up the dew Upon the cut Kentucky blue As your uncles tilted bottles and told lies? Oh, when were you born? When were you born? By the house up on the hill We watched the clouds go white and gray; The Tuscaloosa lightning carried miles Without a sound.  The wind would stir by minutes, Then laze back into the woods, Damping cricket strings as it slipped by. Oh, when were you born? When were you born? Under the silver sun on a hard February morning. Some nights--deep in the hollow hours-- I would lift my head and stare around the room.  The noises had no names, but still I felt them, In the hot, unmoving air. I took my blanket and lay down under the moon. The dogs would bed beside me and I slept. Sometimes I dreamed of girls, or being in the army. But once I dreamed of you.  Oh, when were you born? When were you born? Under the silver sun on a hard February morning. You do not remember.  We never lost a finger to the frost The deep well water ran lucky on our tongues My father was still alive His heart beating hard as he lifted me His heart beating hard as he lifted me

Hush 03:51
On a red horse came war And he flew the black flag Come to burn it all down With our babies inside And he mustered his sons For the martyrs' parade And he couldn't be bought And he couldn't be bribed Hush Baby don't you cry On a black horse came famine And he broke the black tap And we walked to get bread With red rags on our feet But our betters as always Could simper it out And they slept in the Vineyard While we fought in the streets Hush Baby don't you cry On a pale horse came death And hell close behind Our ambassadors out To talk at the tide His laugh was a roar And he rose with the Moon And we fled from his sickle With no place to hide We saw one falling star, Then ten, then a score, And we cried out to God, Right before we went blind In a fireball flash In a fireball flash On a pale horse came death And hell right behind

After All 04:28
The wind is getting colder every day Winter pulls the thread 'til all the edges fray The fireplace burns low Darkness gathers round the glow You sparkle in the soft, retreating light Gold star in the window up the street Yellow ribbons snap in the air by the climbing tree Step inside and bar the door Slow dancing on the kitchen floor I pull you close and whisper in the night When the stars go out When the mountains fall When the moon rises up Just to take her last breath I'll still love you after all I'll still love you after all Gas lines, walk to work, you sent a note "All my love" and "come home soon" was all you wrote Sunday dinner, lemonade Hearts and crazy eights and spades The boys out playing soldier in the yard Repeat chorus At the end of all things I will look in your eyes My love never leave you My love never die Your hands shake as you take the yellow bars Your eyes kiss me with the shine and fire of falling stars Do what must be done For our daughter and our sons A flag, a shouldered bag, I touch your face When the stars go out When the mountains fall When the moon rises up Just to take her last breath I'll still love you after all I'll still love you after all
